U.S. Presidents Favor Statehood for Puerto Rico

One United States President after another has supported statehood for Puerto Rico. In this video, you can hear Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George Bush exhorting the people of Puerto Rico to vote in previous plebiscites.

“The voices of three and a half million American citizens in Puerto Rico constitute a formidible force,” said Gerald Ford. “We are with you and we will support you.”

“The United States will welcome you with open arms,” said President Reagan. “We hope you will join us.”

“I am certain that Puerto Rico will be welcomed as a state,” said President Bush.

Now that Puerto Rico has accepted the repeated invitation, Congress needs to do its part.
