Wanda Vázquez Garced is Puerto Rico Governor

Puerto Rico courts have named Secretary of Justice of Puerto Rico, Wanda Vázquez Garced, as the new governor of Puerto Rico.

Vázquez Garced was born and educated in Puerto Rico, and began her career in public service in the 1980s, when she served the Puerto Rico Department of Housing. She then became district attorney in the Puerto Rico Department of Justice. For 20 years, Vázquez Garced specialized in domestic and sexual abuse.

One of the issues focused on by protestors in Puerto Rico was what some are calling a crisis of violence against women.

Vázquez Garced also served as the head of the Office for Women’s Rights in Puerto Rico. She was chosen to head the Department of Justice by Rossello in 2016 and sworn in as Attorney General in 2017.

Vázquez Garced declined to investigate the leaked private chat messages, and called for “good sense and calm” from protesters.

Pedro Pierluisi was sworn in as governor, but the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico said that Pierluisi’s swearing in was unconstitutional.
